Housing Modified on 05/05/05 at 15:36 MST by Kim

No cost home modifications to increase accessibility are still available in southern Arizona counties. Typical modifications include door widening, bathroom modifications, and installation of grab bars and ramps.

In 2004, CochiseAbility was a partner with DIRECT Center for Independence and Sierra Vista VICAP in a home modification program. Under this program, over 30 consumers were provided with a free assessment to determine is a home access modification would increase their ability to remain living independently in their homes.

VICAP had historically served this population providing volunteer labor to make minor home modifications such as the installation of grab bars. After the success of the initial program, VICAP received additional funding to buy materials and serve people with disabilities and elderly people living within Sierra Vista, Az.

Beginning in February 2005, DIRECT will extend the services to individuals who wish to avoid placement in a residential nursing facility. The area served will include all of Cochise County.

Home modifications will increase the accessibility of homes and empower individuals to live with the maximum level of independence possible. Interested parties may call DIRECT in Tucson at 520-624-6452 or CochiseAbility in Sierra Vista at 520-417-0901.

Sign me up! Yea! It's no secret that my greatest dread is the "N" word- Nursing Home! What an intelligent concept. So much cheaper than maintaining folks in a facility- not to mention quality of life issues! I can't afford a decent assisted living facility, but don't qualify for ACCESS
(sp)...financial assistance. Soooo...need to stay independent as long as possible. Sound familiar? This whole site is so cool!

Housing The United States Department of Labor recently awarded a $50,000 grant to VICAP, in partnership with DIRECT Center for Independence. The purpose of this grant is to develop a home access modification program for persons with disabilities and elderly persons.

VICAP has historically served this population providing volunteer labor to make minor home modifications such as the installation of grab bars. With the grant funds, VICAP and DIRECT will extend the services to individuals seeking to gain or retain employment and to those who wish to avoid placement in a residential nursing facility. The area served will include all of Cochise County.

Home modifications will increase the accessibility of homes and empower individuals to live with the maximum level of independence possible. Modifications are expected to be accomplished beginning January 2004.

I am a Real Estate agent specializing in helping clients find a house that meets their special needs. I also help clients sell their homes to buyers who are looking for this kind of house.
I live in Cochise County and think this new forum is really great.
